During the years 2012-2013, it is estimated that approximately 450 individuals were treated as outpatients with eating disorder related symptoms across the 5 Health and Social Care Trusts in Northern Ireland. Of these, approximately 10% were estimated to be male (FOI, 2013).
During the past 5 years, the proportion of male patients treated with eating disorder related symptoms within the NHS in Northern Ireland has steadily risen, adding to the evidence for their recognition within what is so often viewed as a female illness.
