Male Eating Disorder Charity Launch Awareness Campaign For Eating Disorder Awareness Week

23rd February – 1st March 2015

The Laurence Trust, a local charity focusing on providing information and support to young men and their families affected by this illness is urging sufferers to, ‘Break the Silence….Share the Secret’ during Eating Disorders Awareness Week and beyond. Eating Disorders Awareness Week, 23rd February – 1st March 2015 welcomes the first ever Male Eating Disorder Awareness campaign to be launched in Northern Ireland.

A province wide radio campaign funded by the Children & Young People’s Strategic Partnership will be aired on Citybeat from Monday 23rd February asking people to ‘Face Facts’ and bringing to the fore shocking statistics to highlight the need for sufferers to open up and ‘Break the Silence’ to seek that all important help. Supported by a campaign poster it is hoped much needed awareness will be raised. Chris Nugent, Chair of the Laurence Trust said, “We felt it was time to take a severe approach, our imagery for the poster and script for the radio should leave people in no doubt as to how serious an illness eating disorders are and that they have deadly consequences.” He added, “The campaign concentrates on statistics from the local Trusts and government figures providing an instant snapshot of the facts. Anorexia kills more people than any other mental health condition which equates to 1 in 5 sufferers who will die from the illness.

As a charity focusing on men with eating disorders we wanted to emphasise that 1 in 10 people referred to specialist Eating Disorder Services were male with 3 in 4 suicides being male also.” Pamela Nugent Founder Member of The Laurence Trust said, “Not only is it the aim of the charity to raise awareness to sufferers, their families and the general public but we also wish to advance the education of eating disorders to healthcare providers advising them to become informed in order to provide the right support when needed.”
