You are not alone
It may feel like you are alone, but here at the Laurence Trust, we are here to listen and to understand your story. Everyone has a story and they are all unique, below we have three different stories about those who have suffered with eating disorders and from those that knew someone that had one.
We hope that you can find comfort in these stories, recovery is possible and achievable.
Laurence’s story
The Laurence Trust was named after Laurence Nugent, a young man who lost his life due to an eating disorder. We exist due to that personal experience, and our mission is to ensure that other friends and carers aren’t left in the same tragic situation. We provide men with the support and information needed to access further treatment, additional support and medical care. Whether you need to know how to access crisis care or want to know more about eating disorders, we provide a hub for information and guidance to start you on the right path.
Dave’s story
“The first-ever recorded case of anorexia was a man. I’m not the only one – so why is nobody talking about this?” For those who find it difficult to comprehend what it means to suffer from an eating disorder, Dave’s moving insight into his own struggle with anorexia give a glimpse into the horrifying ordeal of those who are left to battle unsupported with the condition.
Pam’s Story
Hello my name is Pam Nugent I am a Co founder of the Laurence trust along with my son Chris. I am also a mum to Laurence and to Chris. Laurence very sadly left us on the 30th of September 2009. He had an eating disorder. Laurence was a great lad, very very funny very compassionate and a very happy young man in certain ways, but in other ways he wasn’t happy, but we didn’t know that.
Michael’s story
Michael had known Laurence Nugent and his brother Christopher since their school days, and remembered him as an ordinary, happy-go-lucky boy, full of life. Although he noticed profound and disturbing changes in Laurence in their young-adult years, his lack of knowledge about eating disorders meant that he was unprepared for the final tragic outcome.
Chris’s Story
Chris Nugent talks about losing his brother Laurence to eating distress. It is important to remember that you can get help, and recovery is completely possible and achievable.
Steven’s story
When Steven read in the newspaper about the sad circumstances of Laurence Nugent’s death as a result of an eating disorder, he was shocked. But it made him realise, as a sufferer from bulimia himself, that he wasn’t alone. He recounts how, at first, the condition even seemed to offer an attractive option as a lifestyle… before it began to destroy his young life.
